Day One of the Comeback

500 yards and roughly three minutes.  That’s about how long it took me to realize how dreadfully out of shape I am.  My final seven laps around the local high school track this evening turned into a pretty big reality slap.  I’ve got a lot of work in front of me over the upcoming months.  Barring injury, at least it can’t get much worse.  The end result was a two-mile run in 18:15.  As I was struggling to get through my sixth lap, I couldn’t help but to think that eight years and 37 pounds ago, a two-mile run was like having a day off of running.  Not anymore….at least for the forseeable future.  Hopefully, the toughest part is over  -  just getting off the couch.  By the way, thank you to everyone who have submitted some early comments to voice some encouragement.  It reminds me of yet another reason I am happy about getting into a running routine.  Over the past seven years I have slowly forgotten about the running community in general.  Runners are, by and large, the most genuine and positive community/network on the planet.  I look forward to following your journies as well!   It’s a new (and most likely sore) day tomorrow.  Let’s make it two in a row.

  1. Try not to compare where you are now with where you were in 2001. You are not the same, you’ve lived a bunch of life, go out of shape, etc. So what! You’re back!

Focus on today’s achievement. You can do it!!

  2. best of luck to you. my first marathon is going to be Chicago, 2nd will be Disney 2009.

i am thinking you would probably be ready for WDW in January if you started training now.

    good luck.
